The single most important factor. A generalist agency that "covers everything" typically covers nothing well. Look for agencies that specialize in your specific industry - they will have deeper candidate networks and better market knowledge.

Track record with similar roles

Ask directly: "How many similar roles have you filled in the last 12 months?" A good agency will answer with specifics, not vague assurances.

Consultant experience

The person handling your search matters more than the brand. Ask who will be your primary consultant and what their background is. Ideally, they have worked in your industry before becoming a recruiter.

Transparent process

Good agencies will tell you their methodology: how they source candidates, their screening process, timeline expectations, and what information they need from you. Vague promises of "we have the perfect candidate" without process detail is a red flag.

• Agencies that guarantee placements within unrealistically short timeframes
• No questions about your company culture, team dynamics, or management style
• Sending CVs within hours of your first conversation (recycled candidates)
• Pressure to lower your requirements or salary range
